This course will explore approaches to health and healing that resonate with Indigenous peoples and are about more than knowing human physiology and contemporary medical practice. Students will be provided the opportunity to become conversant with the ways in which both historic and present-day colonial practices influence Indigenous people's health. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, students will be introduced to the cluster of social determinants of health and well-being that have impacted Indigenous life over a prolonged period. Contemporary practices will be overlaid on traditional understandings of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health to foster an understanding of holistic Indigenous health and well-being. The course has been designed, developed, and will be delivered on and by the Abegweit Mi'kmaw First Nation Wellness Centre through class discussions, assigned and supplemental readings, as well as individual and collective exploration.
